Steve Sanders, Sensas Team England Manager: said “The reigning World Champions are going to have their work cut out to better last years performance in France, when the England Under 18 squad produced a two day score of 10 points to win the World Championship but, with three anglers still eligible at this age group and the addition of two really good bloodworm anglers, they will be looking to retain their World title.”

Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager for the Angling Trust stated “After last years fantastic performance in France the 2014 squad will be going into this years event full of confidence and I know that manager Steve Sanders and coach Joe Roberts will make sure that this team are totally up to speed.  At this stage in their lives young anglers need to have a management team that they respect and we have no one better in England to ensure success than Steve and Joe.”

Jacob McNeil is the first youngster to progress from the England Talent Pathway programme to a World squad and it is hoped that Jake’s achievement will inspire more youngsters to get involved and follow in his footsteps.  For more information about the England Talent Pathway and to find out how to get involved visit www.anglingtrust.net/talentpathway

64 lb UK sturgeon is world record for fish caught on pole tackle

Jason Le Bosquet (right) needs a hand from Neil Grantham to display the huge 64 lb sturgeon he landed on a Garbolino pole.

A POLE seen recently in Angler’s Mail magazine’s red-hot Product News pages has landed probably the biggest fish on a pole – a 64 lb 4 oz sturgeon to Garbolino and Bait Tech consultant  Jason Le Bosquet.

garbopoleJason, a previous UK Champion, used his brand new Garbolino G MAX Power Legion Pole to land  the 6 ft monster which is believed to beat the previous world’s largest pole caught fish by 8lb.

It came when he was attending the Garbolino Club Angler of the Year Qualifier at Lindholme Lakes near Doncaster. With the fishery full due to the competition Jason was forced onto Lindholme boss Neil Grantham’s one acre garden lake which had rarely ever been fished.

Fishing on his top 4 kit with a double worm hook bait, 10-12 Green Garbolino Bazookarp hollow elastic, Garbo Line 0.20mm main Line, with 0.18mm hook length with a size 12 Gamma Power hook and a float which he designed himself for shallow F1 fishing, a Garbolino DCX4!

Jason had been told there were three big sturgeon in the lake and joked to Lindholme owner Neil Grantham that he would get one out if he hooked it!

Little did he know what was to come and after an hour plus battle the fish was coaxed into a keepnet as it was far too big for any of the landing nets on the fishery!

Jason, no stranger to catching big carp on the pole, commented: “I can’t really believe what has happened to me today, to see a freshwater fish that big is amazing but to actually catch it myself on the pole blows me away! It just shows what you can get out on balanced tackle!”

Garbolino UK boss and England International Darren Cox who was there at the time along with several others commented: “I have witnessed many top angling performances in my life time but Jason’s achievement landing such a huge fish today on the pole is right up there with the very best.

“There are very few anglers have the skill to land such a massive fish like that, amazing, it was certainly a good test for our new Garbolino G MAX Power Legion pole too!”

THE POLE THAT CAUGHT IT – AS SEEN FIRST IN THE MAIL!

Angler’s Mail Product News said  the new G MAX range has raised the bar and models are sure to sell well, with prices from £975.

Speaking recently to Angler’s Mail, Garbolino boss Darren Cox said: “They’re built on the highest quality 900Gpa carbon-fibre available to the industry and a hybridised mandrel configuration, taking the best of everything we have learned over many years.

“They’re poles which have the strength, rigidity, balance and durability to fish with total confidence knowing they are up for the job, wherever you are fishing!” added  Darren.

BLOG: getting the blues at match fishing’s big events – by Lee Kerry

Match fishing blogs are now live every Friday here on the website of the best fishing magazine, Angler’s Mail. We start with a blog by the match ace above, Lee Kerry, sponsored by Preston Innovations.

BIG MATCHES THAT GIVE ME THE BLUES

IF YOU are reading this, then like me, the likelihood is you love going fishing!  More so match fishing.  I don’t really mind how many are in a competition, but I do like to push myself by fishing against the best anglers.

Blog PrestonBecause of this I very much enjoy travelling and competing in the best competitions.  But when April and May hit I nearly always find myself disappointed.  Why?  Well the main reason is that I can see some great competition taking place, yet I can’t be part of it!

I am of course talking about Fish’O'Mania.  Fish’O'Mania is held in high regard by most anglers around the country, but unlike any other top sporting competition it is possible to not even be part of it.

Take the recent  qualifier at Larford Lakes.  A great venue that can hold the 130 anglers required to take a qualifier, the fishing is likely to be competitive, and as a result every one of the 130 pegs are taken.  The of course there is at least another 130 again on the waiting list!  I was one of the unlucky 130 this year,  so even though I was delighted to see my good friend Andy Geldart win the qualifier and make his way into the final, I have not even had a chance to fish against him!

This doesn’t make sense to me.  If we have so many anglers wanting to fish the matches, all prepared to pay there £25 ticket money, then surely as a competition, a business, a sport, we are turning down investment to grow and expand the competition!

Is there a solution to this? Well why not have a qualifier Sat and Sun for example? The winner of each qualifier goes through to a free semi-final.  Highlights shown on Sky Sports, the top 16 in the match advancing to the Fish’O'Mania final.  With double the amount of investment, something along these lines must be possible, and would possibly give rise to a 2nd and 3rd prize in the final itself.

This is just one idea of course; maybe qualifying rounds throughout the country could take place with section winners invited to say four matches, where the top 4 in each match qualify for the final.

Jamie Hughes winner of Fish O Mania 2013

Jamie Hughes won last year’s mega money Fish’O'Mania Final. It’s a great event – but should now be bigger and better, says Lee Kerry.

Critics of my comments would say ‘if it aint broke, don’t fix it’.  But I would argue that more anglers on the bank can only be a good thing for angling, rather than giving B&Q their money and painting the fence at home!

I know many people often feel deflated after the draw for qualifiers, and also the fact that the many anglers on a venue often leads to a very peggy result, with the rest of the field feeling disheartened.

This blog certainly isn’t a case of sour grapes; I managed 3 tickets this year, opting to send one back to take place in the two day Sensas Festival in France instead.

With my tickets I have taken part in one match so far, barely getting a bite on an overcrowded lake, I have also taken part in two Maver Match This qualifiers that follow a similar system.  First time around drawing badly, then drawing a fantastic peg and winning the match to qualify for the final.  So I am certainly not bitter because this system of big matches has worked out for me this year.

The difference with Maver Match This, at the moment, is that if you are organised, you can get on every qualifying match.  If the tickets were heavily oversubscribed like Fish’O'Mania, you can guarantee that Phil Briscoe would react, and make sure the competition grew to suit.

My last Fish’O'Mania ticket this year is the Oaks Fishery.  This will be a good qualifier, but as usual one lake, or even one peg, will stand out, giving the rest of us hopefuls no chance.

I have noticed that the organisers did react somewhat this year by growing those qualifiers they felt could take extra pegs.  Pleased to see there was a reaction to the growing interest in the competition, but more anglers, means more pressure on the venues, and the fishing and venues reputation could suffer.  It seems to me like a quick fix, were the answer needs more careful consideration.

Having said all that I and thousands of others will continue to apply each year and Fish’O'Mania will be the country’s most participated competition for many years to come as a result, but could it be EVEN bigger and really put angling on the sporting map!

Food for thought…

New canal fishing championships launched

A NEW event is being set up for canal match fans, thanks to the Angling Trust & Canal & River Trust, with plans to emulate Riverfest.

Good pegging requires commonsense.

Canal fishing has got a much-needed boost with the new championships, which could become something much bigger in 2015.

Angler’s Mail can confirm a pilot Pairs Canal Championship is to be held on the Shropshire Union in the Soudley area on September 14.

With echoes of 2013’s successful roll-out of Riverfest, if all goes well then a full scale Canal Championships will be staged in 2015 with a series of regional qualifiers followed by a two-day final.

The 2014 Championship is open to anyone 16 years of age and above with an entry fee of £40 per pair, with £10 optional pools on the day per angler. Pegs will be capped at 100 pairs.

To get the event going, it is not necessary to have individual membership of the Angling Trust, or to be a Friend of Canal & River Trust.

Payouts are: 1st pair £1,250, 2nd pair £750, 3rd pair £500 (subject to entries and sponsorship).

There will also be an open junior section run in conjunction with the main event on the same day open to anyone under 17 years of age on the day of the match. This event will be free to enter, and all junior competitors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Entry details will be announced soon.

John Ellis, National Fisheries and Angling Manager of the Canal & River Trust said “We are delighted to be working in partnership with the Angling Trust and Terry Nutt, and his team from Hodnet to launch this event.

“Canals are vastly underrated and offer some fantastic catches so we hope events such as this will inspire people to give their local canal a go.”

Ben Thompson, Senior Competitions Manager at the Angling Trust said “This is great news and a sign of our ongoing commitment to anglers and match angling in England.

“It is important to us that we provide opportunities for anglers to participate in a variety of competitions and with individual and team matches well established, this pair’s format will add to our offer to match anglers.

“We look forward to building on our existing positive relationship with the Canal & River Trust and hope to establish the Canal Championships as a mainstay of the match calendar for 2015 and beyond.”

On the match fishing scene in June and July – with Darren Cox

JUNE for me has been great fishing, as the carp decided to spawn a little later this year the commercials have been very up and down.

Blog GarbolinoThere have still been plenty of fish to catch at the right time of day but some of the match results have shown that the fish are still shoaled up tighter than normal.

Lots of matches have been won with very big weights with much smaller back-up framing weights.

Luckily for me this lull in consistent sport coincided with me concentrating on some canal fishing.

My first task was to try and get through the next round of the Drennan Knockout Cup staged on the Shropshire Union Canal at Church Eaton/Little Onn.

This is a wonderful piece of canal which I haven’t fished for over 12 years. It brought back a lot of good memories when I used to travel with Clint Elliott when he lived up near me before moving to Cornwall.

The practice match I booked on didn’t quite go to plan though! I spent several evenings prior to the match making up squatt rigs for a full 5 hours squatt fishing practice, something we don’t do a lot of these days and I wanted to be ready for it.

My plans were scuppered when I pulled out the bream flyer and everyone said I would win the match! To cut a long story short I did with a lovely net of bream and skimmers for 15 lb 10 oz. A nice day’s fishing but not very good squatt fishing practice.

Come the main knockout day I drew a much less fancied area but started well on the squatt and managed to snaffle a 2 lb bream on my squatt rig after about two hours. This put me well up in my section so gave me some time to look for one on my chopped worm rig across.

Two others in quick succession were very welcome and gave me a nice 7 lb 12 oz and enough to go through comfortably.

Next stop Viaduct hopefully for some real bagging!

My next stint on a canal has been a lot different to the ‘Shroppy’; the Gloucester canal is wide and deep but I love it. It’s what I call a ‘mans’ canal and not for the faint hearted with depths a full top 5 in areas!

My Kamasan Starlets team have the Winter League Final coming up this weekend so we have been putting some practice in.

It’s lovely fishing with lots of pole fish, skimmers, roach and eels on bloodworm and joker as well as some bream if you are lucky on the feeder.  Hopefully next month I can report some good news about what happened.

I also have my first go at the Riverfest competition coming up. Unfortunately I was away in France when the tickets came out so only managed to get three tickets, hopefully one of them will be the ‘golden ticket’ to the final.

The rivers appear to be fishing really well all over the country at the moment.

We had a bit of rain which put some flow and colour into them for the start of the season which really helped with good weight of bream and small fish from all over the country.

They are in need of a drop more now which is forecast this weekend so if you’re going out be prepared for it.

It certainly won’t do the Bristol Avon any harm when I get there next week.

Who'll be the next Fish'o'Mania winner? Jamie Hughes, the reigning champion will face stiff competition from aces including Garbolino men.

Who’ll be the next Fish’o'Mania winner? Jamie Hughes, the reigning champion will face stiff competition from aces including Garbolino men.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish all the Fish’O’Mania finalists good luck next weekend especially the Garbolino boys Steve Cooke, Andy Geldart and Shaun Cooke. Allez les blues as they say in France!

If you’re coming to Fish’O’Mania at Cudmore on the Saturday (and there’s a free ticket with the preview in Tuesday’s Angler’s Mail magazine) I will be there. Not competing this time, but helping out on the Vale Royal Angling stand … so come and say hello. If not, then see you here on the Angler’s Mail website Blogs section next month.
